I was trying to write a tweet last night and managed to get it down to under the designated 140 characters.

But upon posting using the iOS app I was duely greeted with a lovely error message from twitter.

Tweet not sent error message iphone app

This a very unhelpful error message! I thought that the app would have at least gave me the type of error so I had something to work with network, tweet length, server issues etc.

I was checking my network connections/password but for the life of me could not find the reason for this happening. The app gave no clue as to what was wrong.

I then fired up mobile safari and mobile twitter, pasted my tweet in and it stated that I had “-2” characters left. So I tweaked the tweet and eventually got this to send.

After this I decided to do a little delving into the reasons for this happening. And the only thing that stuck out was the URL. Normally when using a URL is within a tweet it uses 20 characters even when the URL is shorter than this. But now it seems that URLs require 22 characters. The app has yet to be updated to this and still thinks it requires 20 characters thus upon posting to twitter will fail!

I’m sure that Twitter will release an app update for this issue soon!

The native tweet feature on iOS already treats URLs as 22 characters aswell.

I have not checked this within any other Twitter 3rd party apps i.e. Hoot-suite etc.

Please let me know below if these have similar issues.
