The Monster that is Facebook Video!

In the last 12 months, the number of video posts per Facebook user has increased 75% globally and 94% in the United States, Facebook announced yesterday.  The social media juggernaut also revealed a handful of other stats.

  • 65% of Facebook’s Video views are now on mobile devices
  • Internationally, clips from consumers and marketers in the newsfeed have risen 3.6 times year over year.
  • On average, more than 50% of U.S. users who visit Facebook daily watch at least one video.
  • From a HawkPartners study commissioned by Facebook that surveyed 2,418 Facebook users in the U.S., 76% said Facebook is the place where they most often discover videos. Other choices included YouTube, “directly from a friend,” Google, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest and others.

Mark D’Arcy, chief creative officer for Facebook’s Creative Shop, said, “We are only just starting to unlock the potential of sight, sound and motion in a feed-driven world.”

Although self-reported, these numbers do seem to marry with much of 2014’s consensus: Facebook is giving Google’s YouTube serious cause for concern. YouTube’s supremacy of the online video space is also under threat as an advertising platform, as Facebook steps up it’s roll out of Facebook Video Ads. – The new numbers released, will almost certainly be an interesting read for advertisers and brands.

Since June 2014, Facebook has averaged more than 1 billion video views every day. On average, more than 50% of people who come back to Facebook every day in the US watch at least one video every day. Facebook Video is one monster, that will just get bigger and bigger.
